Air Traffic Control, chess playing and chess programs : lessons to learn

Air traffic control and chess playing are human cognitive activities that share a large number of characteristics. In this paper, we first discuss similarities of these two activitie; then, using the experience gained in the field of games (and chess) programming, which has encountered numerous excellent results, we try to draw some conclusions on how systems could be designed to improve performance of Air Traffic Control.
