"This text is an extended version of tha talk given by one of the authors at the Segovia conference on Real Algebraic and Analytic Geometry (Juin/July, 1995). We present a brief overview of the topoloical classification of real Enriques surfaces completed recently by us and make an attempt to systemize the known classification results for other special types of surfaces. Emphasis is also given to the particular tools used and to the general phenomena discovered; in particular, we prove two new theorems which relate the orientability of the real part of a surface with the deficiency in the Harnack-Smith-Thom inequality and the $operatorname{Spin}$-type of the complexification and establish some congruence type prohibitions on the Euler characteristic of the real part. "
