In this survey we describe several physically motivated problems in which the corresponding mathematical models lead to overdetermined elliptic boundary-value problems. Such situations appear for instance in fluid mechanics and capillarity theory, theory of elasticity, electrostatics. Our goal is to give an idea of how they have been treated mathematically.
