In providing both the language and conceptual framework for many areas of science and engineering, mathematics has a long tradition of interaction with other disciplines. This tradition is rising to new levels with the growing importance of complex systems, computation, and interdisciplinary scientific research. Mathematicians are challenged to move beyond personal and institutional barriers to engage in more extensive collaborations with researchers in other fields. Collaborative research has the potential both for great insights in the sciences and fundamental advances in mathematics.
