A 24 h ligature of the uterine artery was performed in the rat on the 7th, or the 8th, 9th and 10th day of gestation, at the level of the cervix. This study was intended to determine if an occlusion of uterine blood vessels, early in gestation, could change the fetal and placental weight. It was found that only the treatment on the 9th and 10th day causes growth retardation, malformations and fetal mortality. The placental weight is not altered by the ligature.
