The ultrastructure of the testis of the chilopod Lithobins forficatus L. during the fifth larval stage has been studied. The testis wall is constituted of an epithelial layer, a thin basement membrane, two concentric muscle layers, a sheet of extremely interdigitated epithelial cells. The testis lumen is filled with spermatogonia and spermatocytes. The muscle fibers contain a single nucleus; the contractile elements present a peculiar organization: the number of actin filaments at I band level, per unit area, is two times higher than that of A band level, and the ratio between myosin and actin filaments is about 1:2. In longitudinal sections the Z bands are not evident. The spermatogonia have a nucleus with dispersed chromatin and a compact nucleolus and a reduced cytoplasm, which contains ribosomes and small mitochondria. During spermatocytes growth, nucleus and cytoplasm increase markedly in volume. Ribosomes, mitochondria, dictyosomes and endoplasmic reticulum are very numerous.
