Vengono descritte varie relazioni che legano l'ordinamento di alcuni simboli base, come cifre o lettere, agli ordinamenti delle sequenze formate da quei simboli, ad esempio numeri o parole. Si esaminano diversi casi, nella pratica matematica e nell'esperienza comune, sul piano teorico e didattico. La situazione presenta vari aspetti più complicati di quanto usualmente si pensi.

We describe various relationships linking the orderings of some basic symbols, like digits or letters, and the orderings of sequences containing such symbols, like numbers and words. We examine many different cases, in both ma- thematical practice and common experience, from a theoretical and an educational viewpoints. Some unexpected situations are shown and discussed.
