We prove the following result: if f = \varphi' is the Ghteaux derivative of a functional on a reflexive Banach space, and is demicontinuous of class (S)_+, then it has local index +1 at every isolated zero which is also a local minimum point for q•. An application to the existence of multiple solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations is given.
