Presentiamo i contributi di Dedekind ai fondamenti della matematica: le definizioni dei numeri naturali, dei numeri reali e dei numeri ideali sono le piuù note, ma decisivo è stato il suo ruolo nell'introduzione di una visione strutturale insiemistica nell'algebra astratta, insieme a molti dei nuovi concetti. Dedekind è stato anche il mentore di Cantor nella crescita della sua teoria dell'infinito, con alcune frizioni documentate nella corrispondenza.

Dedekind is well known for his definitions of the natural, real and ideal numbers, but his long lasting influence is rooted in a structural vision of set-theoretic type in the foundations of abstract algebra. Several new concepts were due to him. Moreover many times Cantor relied on Dedekind's suggestions and assistance in the building of his own theory of the infinite. Their relation was not easy, as we will see from their correspondence.
