The time-course of protein synthesis resumption following Bufo bufo egg fertilization has been evaluated from the relative amounts of high salt-dissociable and high salt-stable ribosomes, apparent in analytical sedimentation profiles. The activation of protein synthesis is relatively slow. Only at tailbud stage does the synthetic rate reach a level comparable to that observed in adult differentiated cells. In this respect the situation existing in developing Bufo bufo embryos parallels that described in Xenopus but appears markedly different from that observed in Rana.
