Balanus amphitrite unsegmented eggs demonstrate a cholinesterase activity which does not change significantly during cleavage. Between stage 5 (early gastrula) and stage 12 (unhatched nauplius) the enzyme activity increases gradually about 15 times; a further increase, at a lower rate, takes place before hatching. Eserine causes a cholinesterase inhibition decreasing from approximately 75% at the early stages to 45% in the unhatched nauplius. Conversely, DFP inhibits cholinesterase increasingly from 8% to 30% (Table II). No effects are obtained with iso-OMPA. The results are discussed with regard to the function and specificity of cholinesterases in embryos of Balanus.
