Infrared spectra of aqueous solutions of dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) in a wide range of concentrations are presented and discussed. The present work is preliminary to a wider research including Raman laser and near infrared vibrational investigations. In the infrared spectra it is possible to observe the presence of at least three νS⁢o components in a certain range of more concentrated solutions, and the presence of a single νS⁢o component in the case of more dilute solutions. As a preliminary hypothesis, such components are attributed to the νS⁢o vibrations of three main kinds of DMSO molecules in the complex (D⁢M⁢S⁢O)x⁢(H2⁢O)y system. The knowledge of the structure of DMSO aqueous solutions has particular weight in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields, also in relation to the suggestive hypothesis on the part played by DMSO in regard to the structure of water.
