The genetic structure of Drosophila simulans wild populations is studied by accurate sampling of the breeding sites and analysis of Est-6 polymorphism. The results suggest that the sampled population is subdivided into several smaller entities. Each micropopulation corresponds roughly to a breeding site. In each of them the low mobility of flies leads to inbreeding conditions. The internal mobility of the population is lowered by the presence of natural barriers: even very small differences in the breeding site characteristics (i.e. 50 cm differences in depth) can be a strong limiting factor.
