The thesis according to which the discovery (or the invention) of the synthetic dyestuffs of the first generation (around 1860) gave rise to new material prectices is examined in the light of several documents of the time. The analysis of the diaries of one of August W. Hofmann's assistants, on the one hand, and of several articles addressing the the natur of synthetic dyestuffs does not corroborate the said thesis.
